With a high demand for farming, many RuneScape players out Venezuela believe certain areas of RuneScape are governed by it. RuneScape’s economy is just like any other economy — it is heavily influenced by the economics of scarcity, and the expanding number of folks farming gold and items in RuneScape is affecting prices for a variety of unique items. The level of this impact became apparent once the catastrophe in Venezuela escalated to a new level early last year.

In March 2019, the power network of Venezuela collapsed and a rapid succession of blackouts struck the whole nation, leaving millions without electricity or water. At their summit in March, these blackouts were occurring almost every hour for a week. Hospitals were a few of the worst places affected. “A hell of a good deal of people died due to the power cuts,” Martinez explains. The issues are still impacting people now, and some think they will continue long into the future, before the situation with the government is resolved.

“[People] can not get treatment such as dialysis and the hospitals’ states are insanely bad to the point that it is a hazard problem,” Martinez adds. The power cuts have become a major problem for Venezuelan RuneScape players that rely on RuneScape because their main source of income. For Martinez, the power cuts were the reason that he moved away from conventional gold farming methods to train accounts for U.S. dollars, because of sudden disconnection during battle could end in the passing of his character and the reduction of earnings. “After the first wave of blackouts started me and the guys that worked with me lost almost all of our enterprise,” Martinez says.

They can still affect you for several days depending on that part of Venezuela you live in.” Perez has been affected by the power cuts. “Power outages continue to be a daily thing and it pisses me off each time,” Perez writes. He gets disconnected from our chats. “We all know the energy system and all the other nation controlled systems are a mess,” Perez continues. “An illustration of lack of maintenance is the nation owned ISP. We’ve been chatting for a few minutes and also my internet has stopped working three times today. Hydro/water system too: you don’t have water if you do not have water pumps. I could go on and on, honestly.”
